Hot off the press we proudly present our all new Oconto County 2015-2017 Snowmobile Trails map. Please destroy all old maps. We have renumbered all trail intersections with new “Locator Numbers” that will be common to all users of Oconto County Trails. Oconto County is working on standardizing their recreational sign system throughout the county no matter what form of recreation you are participating in. On each sign there is a 3 digit number which corresponds to the map; and an 8 digit National GRID/MGRS (NAD83) GPS location system.

Oconto County ATV/UTV Map

The Oconto County ATV Trail System has over 500 miles of trails for your enjoyment. Oconto County trails connect to Marinette, Forest, Florence, Langlade counties and the UP of Michigan. Enjoy our trails in 2017 from April 28 – November . Slippery Rock, Chute Pond

This short, moderately steep trail leads to the top of a rock outcrop that features five vistas. Three of the vistas overlook Chute Pond, one looks over a Forest Service tree plantation, and one looks north along State Highway 32 with Bagley Rapids on the west and Green Lake on the east. At the northernmost vista, look north to see the last remaining Forest Service fire lookout tower almost six miles away at Mountain. Looking south from the southernmost vista you can see the radio tower on Suring Hill, about eight miles away. Be sure to bring your binoculars on this hike!

Mountain Log House Museum

The restoration of this log house gave birth to the formation of the Mountain Historical Society in 1999. Fred & Augusta Bartz constructed this first permanent home in Mountain in the late 1880’s of hand hewn logs. The old log house serves as a historical museum and information center. It is also a memorial to the Mountain Pioneers!

Mountain Fire Tower

The Lookout Fire Tower in Oconto County, Wisconsin opened in 1935 as a working fire tower. It was one of 19 lookouts originally constructed in this part of the National Forest, and listed on the National Historic Lookout Registry in 2008. It was opened to the public in 2016 as lookout tower to the general public.

Mc Comb Lake Cross-Country Ski and Hiking Trails

The Ski trails are cross country trails that are tracked and groomed for traditional skiing. Most of the trails are double tracked. A trail map can be located at the trail head, as well as along the routes.

Cathedral Pines

One of the finest, old growth pine-hemlock stands in the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest! In the spring Blue Herons can be found nesting high in the tree tops. 

Holt & Balcom Logging Camp Museum

The site of the oldest logging camp in North America, built on this sight in 1881. Open Saturdays in the summer from 10-3.

Lakewood Fish Rearing Station

The Trout Rearing Station reopened in 2015 with the support of the WI DNR. The volunteers successfully raised 15,000 Brook Trout with less than 1% mortality to release last October. In 2016 volunteers raised 21,000 Brook Trout and 4,000 Brown Trout. Rearing them from fingetlings to 8-11 inch fish requires constant monitoring and care. In the months of July and August, the Fish Rearing Station is open for public tours from 11-2 on Saturdays.  

Woodland Trail Winery

This is a cute little destination if you’re out sight-seeing in this part of Wisconsin. They have a scenic little spot elevated above “town” and stock a large selection of local wines, preserves, syrups, and some home-craft items like baskets, cutting boards, and bottle holders. They do tastings pretty much for anyone that walks in the door, anytime of the day.

Quartz Hill – Lakewood, Laona Forest Service District

Discover the breath taking Quartz Hill Trail located on the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest in Laona, Wis. This stunning trail cascades into two sections. One portion is located on the east and the other portion is located on the west side of Wisconsin State Highway 32. The east section leads across a boardwalk to the top of McCaslin Mountain. It has moderately steep sections, but the view from the top of this quartz rock outcrop is worth the climb. The prettiest time to explore the trail is in fall when the brilliant fall colors will be visible on the surrounding hills from the overlook.

Bass/Boot Lake Recreation Area

Bass Lake is a 145 acre lake located in Oconto County. A picnic/beach ground is available for swimming and playing in the water. A separate boat landing area is available should you prefer to boat. There is a nominal per car fee.

Lumberjack Steam Train, Camp 5

Take the whole family on a trip back in time with a ride on a vintage steam train. Head for Laona and climb aboard the famed Lumberjack Steam Train for a journey into the late 1800’s. Sit in a rare cupola caboose as the vintage steam engine takes you to an actual site of a Northwoods logging camp. The “4-spot” Steam Locomotive, built in 1916 pulls two all-steel passenger coach cars, an open air observation car and three cabooses. The “4-spot” is the only “PRAIRIE” style steam locomotive operating in the state of Wisconisn.

Lakewood Cross Country Ski & Hiking Tails

Twenty-two kilometers of groomed ski trails in the winter and mowed hiking trails in the summer. Trail maintenance and grooming is provided by the Lakewood Cross Country Ski Club. Please no hiking in the winter months when skiing is in season.

Waterfall Tour, Marinette Wisconsin

Waterfalls Capital of Wisconsin, is home to 14 beautiful waterfalls which are located primarily in Marinette County’s Parks System. Hike, camp, or picnic along the tour.
