Water Fun

Although Spur of the Moment Ranch sits on the Nicolet Trail, at the south eastern end of the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest, there is an abundance of other natural resources in the area. The ranch is centrally located in Oconto County, home to over 50 lakes and more than 30 rivers and streams with opportunities for plenty of water fun.

The ranch is about 3 miles from the Chute Pond County Park. The park has a swimming beach; boat launch; and is where you will find slippery rock. Slippery rock is an area that many have found fun through the years, it is a short hike across the dam and back to a natural rock formation that forms a slide. Bass and Boot Lake have pristine public swimming beaches with great sand and ready for an afternoon of fun in the summer. There is a nominal charge to use the beaches, they are maintained by the forest service. Wheeler Lake up in Lakewood has a smaller beach but just sandy and just as much fun. All of the lakes mentioned here have public boat launches as well.
The ranch is near the Oconto River; but about 15 miles west is the Wolf River. The Wolf River is home to some fun family white water rafting and tubing. For a tubing experience check out Bob and Joni’s Rafting in Langlade County; for more white water fun investigate Shotgun Eddy’s also in Langlade County. The Peshtigo River also offers rafting trips. Depending on the year, rafting is usually best in the spring when the water is fast, but is an enjoyable way to stay cool on a hot day in the summer.
Whether you are a serious rapids kayaker or just enjoy relaxing lake kayaking Oconto County has a spot for you. With the many lakes and streams available you have an opportunity to kayak white water; or take a relaxing float on the quieter streams and lakes. A couple of blocks from the ranch, there is a boat landing that is a nice spot for quiet kayaking on the mile that meanders down to Chute Pond proper.
