Horseback Riding

Horseback riding in the summer in Mountain   can be a little hotter; and buggy. Here at the ranch, we use guinea hens for natural bug control. They eat their weight in wood ticks; they also eat mosquito larva; and other bugs and small rodents, which helps to make us horse friendly even in the summer time. A few of our paddock areas have shade; but the ranch also has an outdoor style with stalls if horses need shade during the day or evening to help them get some rest from the bugs.

The following is a list of answers to frequently asked questions about bringing horse guests to the ranch.

The Nicolet National Forest is a beautiful place to explore on horseback. Spur of the Moment Resort is not a trail riding facility, it is a place where people who own their own horses and enjoying horse camping  come to ride. Horses are allowed anywhere in the forest, however, there are several favorite trails directly from the ranch that guests enjoy. I do have maps of the area which I am more than happy to explain to you, my goal is to eventually have them on GPS for guests. The Nicolet Recreational Trail is a shared trail, you will encounter ATV’s and UTV’s on this trail. However, that being said the trail is an old railroad bed extending 50 miles to the south; and approximately 30 miles to the north. It is the main thoroughfare for all sports to get to their trails through the woods. Oconto County is very fortunate to have a dedicated recreational officer; and ATV clubs that work very hard to try and make sure that everyone sharing the trails feels safe and comfortable.

Once you leave the main trail, there is a river crossing at the Oconto River; you ride through a beautiful stand of old Pines…truly a favorite with many guests. There is a great Lookout over Chute Pond that is particularly colorful in the fall as the leaves turn. To the south of the resort is one of our best kept secrets, it is a bit challenging to find, but those who find will never forget it. It is a rock bluff that overlooks the landscape for several miles. Those who find it feel as though they have been on a true adventure and have a great sense of pride and satisfaction that just makes them smile. Another favorite place to ride is on the old cross country ski trails around McComb Lake.

There are other trails that you can check out in the area if you are staying for a week or so. These are within an hour trailer ride.  They include the Jones Springs Trails; Crocker Hills Trails; Poplar Ridge Trails; and Nine Mile Trail.
