No, they are guinea hens. I tell folks that they are working birds on the ranch. A guinea hen will eat its weight in wood ticks in a season, they view them like snickers bars – they love them. Also on the menu are mosquitos; small rodents; and even snakes. They are excellent watch dogs, and will raise a ruckus if anything seems out of the ordinary. They love to range around the yard, generally stay in one large group or several small groups. One of them usually stands guard while the others hunt and peck. They can fly sort of, not long distances and depth perception is really not there best skill as I have seen them aim for a branch, miss, and fall to the ground only to pick themselves up, dust themselves, and look around as if to say none of you saw that did you. They are not the brightest of God’s species as they will sometimes lay an egg, and sit a number of feet away. Because they range all over the ranch, it is really hard to gather the eggs. In 11 years I have only had one hen with the motherly instinct to actually make a nest; sit on the eggs and hatch out the chicks. They do have natural predators, and fall prey to an occasional owl; fox; or fisher. In order to keep them safe, we do keep them in a coup at night where they roost and rest for the next days adventures. Guineas actually come in 17 different colors, although, mostly we buy in the pearl grey birds as they seem the hardiest for our environment. Enjoy watching the guineas working at the ranch!

Happy Ground Hog Day everyone. According to Wynter the groundhog at the Milwaukee Zoo, she did not see her shadow today so that suggests an early spring here in Wisconsin. Although we are 3 hours north and I could not find my ground hog today, I did happen upon this great deer track in the snow in the woods. The ground hogs in Mountain did not see their shadows or perhaps did not get up on such a cloudy, dreary day, so it appears as though we are headed for an early spring also. Imagine that, I hardly feel like we have had winter yet, but I better keep my mouth shut because letting that cat out of the bag could bring mother nature calling our way.

An interesting and rather humorous thing happened on the ranch as I was cleaning a cabin distributing last minute items cabins for the weekend. I noticed white little pellet looking things all over the ranch, at first and most of the day I was wondering how my dear husband managed to salt the entire ranch so evenly without my seeing him do it, really, that would have taken a very long time. Ididn’t think too much of it, but it really wasn’t melting the snow at all. Later in the day, as we were walking together to go turn up the heat in the cabins, my dear Skip laughed heartily at me; and told me how special I was, he said that was Rime. I must admit after both of us finished giggling about what I was thinking, I must say that I have never heard of Rime before, and don’t ever remember really noticing it. Thanks to all things Wikipedia, I looked it up, turns out “ it is a white ice that forms when the water droplets in fog freeze to the outer surfaces of objects.” Never a dull moment at the ranch.

Thank you to all of our Living Social guests who have come through the ranch this winter, and those yet to come. We appreciate the business. As a part of our Living Social Package we have been building a winter campfire for our Living Social guests who wish to brave the elements and experience a smores campfire on some pretty cold nights. To be honest, after a nice dinner, both Skip and I like to nestle down and relax watching TV through our eyelids. This commitment has made us go out; load up the Kubota RTV with a load of wood; grab our LED flashlight; bag of ingredients for smores; and head to the fire pit out behind the Bunkhouse. Arriving at the firepit your senses adjust to the dark; quiet; and cold. But Skip gets the fire roaring and it warms up quickly, while Iwalk through the ranch, knocking on doors inviting folks to the campfire. There are folks who decline, but for the ones that come and join us have a great time. It is fun to meet new folks; chat about what we all do; funny camping experiences; what they enjoy about the north woods; and of course a few fears about what forest animal might visit us at the fire. Not to worry – the fierest thing we’ve had so far is our little springer dog hoping for something to drop at her feet that is edible. Since mother nature has not been kind to us with snow thus far; the north woods has been exceedlingly quiet so guests really get to enjoy the crackle of the fire; brisk night air; gorgeous starry nights; and roasting marshmellows over the open fire and making yummy smores.

Many folks have been asking if massage would again be available. Well here it is. It will change slightly, as we have turned our dedicated massage cabin back into a rental cabin. But, I feel that our alternative will be much relaxing for our guests. Our massage will come to your cabin, you will have an in room massage. Our new massage therapist is Cherie Bartha WI #4934-046. Cherie is state licensed graduating from Blue Sky School of Professional Massage and Therapeutic Bodywork; she completed training in Reiki with our previous massage and Reiki master Lori Yeager. Cherie has been involved at the ranch in our Christmas Craft Fair as a vendor for the last few years. She has been a vendor choice for some of the organic hand soap we use in the bathrooms at the ranch.

Our massages are by appointment as Cherie lives in Oconto Falls, and comes to the ranch specially to do the massages. A one hour massage will be $75. Massages can be booked in advance for weekdays after 2:00 PM; and on weekends almost anytime during the day. You can mention in the comments that you would like to schedule a massage if you book online; or book a massage by phone for your visit.

Here at the ranch we are busy decorating for Christmas. Many of you have probably noticed that there are 6 days blocked out at Christmas. For the first time in many, many years our children and grandchildren will be home for Christmas; as well as our niece and nephew and their families. To round out the family, my brother and sister-in-law will be joining in the fun as well. The children are tickled pink and so excited about meeting new cousins. The adults are looking forward to being able to spend time together and catch up with one another. Skip is hoping the weather holds so that we can get take Thorn and the carriage out for a Christmas drive with family. There will be the old-fashioned cutting of the Christmas tree and trimming with the kids. There will be lots of food on hand, and just maybe a special visit from Santa. In this season of joy, we wish all of you a safe, happy, fun-filled holiday and Go Packers! From the ranch —Merry Christmas! Hope to see you in the New Year.

The first Saturday of December, mark the date in your calendar for next year. Everyone who came to the Spur Christmas Craft Fair seemed to have a good time. There was a little snow left on the ground, which truely put the ranch in the spirit of Christmas. The day was festive inspite of a little drizzle that later turned to cold rain but the ranch hosted about 150 people who braved the weather to check out the cabins and explore the cabins for those truly unique gifts for someone special for Christmas. Skip hooked Thorn (the mighty Percheron) to our wagonette, Thorn and the kids delighted in traveling around the ranch by carriage.

Spur Christmas Craft Fair is just around the corner, don’t forget to save the date – December 3rd from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Our line up of crafters and vendors is firming up, some of your favorites returning. Out by the large firepit in front of our Birch Cabin will be Tom Weiss doing his chain saw carvings; and Joe Auer with his iron art. Joe has done many pieces for folks that have visited the ranch. This year Joe is doing inserts between the posts on the deck of our new log home. Rachael Arndt will be back with her Christmas wreaths, always a hit. Come early to make sure that you get your favorite holiday wreath, she usually sells out. Amy Donaldson of Amy’s at Woodhaven will not only have her dips and sauces to make your holiday entering fun and tasty, she will also be doing a wine tasting for everyone’s enjoyment. What a great way to choose a special holiday wine for your table. Peggy Bohn will be bringing unique decorating gifts sure to be right for someone on your Christmas list. Cherie Bartha will be returning this year; she has provided the ranch with some of the organic soap that we use in the cabins; along with other bathroom accessories to pamper yourself or someone you love. Diane Wilke is a local artist who works her magic on wood through her lovely scenes and signs. Lynn Koniter is new to the Spur Christmas Craft Fair this year, her specialty is quilts and bags. Jennifer Debnar is also new to our event and will have hand made purses. We are pleased that the Crooked Lake/ Mountain Lion’s Club will have their traditional bake sale in the bunkhouse, they also are usually a sell out, with proceeds going to a local person in need or project. As always, there will be refreshments in the Bunkhouse; and Black Rose Thorn our Percheron pulling our beautiful wagonette will be our taxi through the ranch. There is no cost for carriage rides around the ranch, bundle up, make a day of it, have fun.
